FACILITY /PARK
NAME -DESIGNATION POLICY
Purpose
To honor groups, organizations, businesses, or
individuals who make significant contributions to the
quality of life in Muskegon, above and beyond what is
ordinary or expected, by naming a park or park
facility in their name for a specified period of time.

Parks
1. Major Parks
The City actively seeks out deserving groups,
individuals, organizations or businesses to
permanently name the various major parks after.
2. Minor Parks
a The city will name small parks adopted by
any group, individual, organization or
business after the entity for the period of
adoption.
b) After ten years, the park would be
permanently named as such.
c) Adoption of a park means that the entity
would provide the primary maintenance of the
facility, including cutting the grass,
watering, and physical plant improvements.
3. Leisure Services Board
a) It is the responsibility of the Leisure
Services Board to evaluate deserving and to
recommend to the City Commission the naming
of the park.
b) Deserving could be a significant dollar
contribution, considerable time and effort
given to make Muskegon a better place to
live, or considerable actions by a group or
individual that improves and secures the
quality of life for Muskegon citizens.
c. Facilities
1. Minor structure
a) Minor structures are named after
individuals, groups, organizations or
businesses who have offered considerable
contributions to the quality of life in
Muskegon.
b) The Leisure Services Board has the authority
to designate a name to such structures for a
period of time up to 3 years.
c) The City Commission has the authority to
designate a name for a longer term or
permanently.
d) Minor structures include
(1) Picnic Shelters
(2) Ball Diamonds
(3) Other similar structures
2. Major structures
a) The Leisure Services Board makes a
recommendation to the City Commission
regarding a permanent name for major
structures.
Major structures include
(1) MceGraft Park Bandshell
(2) Smith-Ryerson Community Center
(3) Other similar structures
3. Nominations and Signs
a) Annually, the Leisure Services Board will
take nominations from the public for the
naming of available facilities.
b) The Parks Department will make appropriate
signage to be attached to the facility
designating the name of the recipient.
Ceremony
The Leisure Services Board will publicly announce the
naming of any facility and have an appropriate
ceremony honoring the recipient.
